Marriage Ceremonies for Visitors

Civil marriage ceremonies in the City of Tórshavn are solemnised by the major of Tórshavn and are pursued in Faroese with a translation in English. The ceremony is free of charge. In order to get married by civil ceremony in the City of Tórshavn, we need certain documentation from you upon your arrival in the Faroe Islands:

  • Birth certificates
  • Your marital status
  • Final divorce papers if you are divorced
  • Death certificate of your former spouse if you are a widow/widower

After the first contact with the City of Tórshavn, you will get the form “Notice of Marriage” sent to your email address to fill in and sign. Please send the "Notice of Marriage" back to the municipality by email.

If the original documents are not available in English, they must be translated by an authorised translator.

Please send the documentation listed above to this e-mail address:

Please note that notice must be given no later than 4 weeks before the date of the intended civil marriage.

Bringing two witnesses
On the day of the wedding you will need to bring with you two people, who are prepared to witness the marriage and sign the marriage register. Send us the names and addresses of the witnesses.

If you do not bring two witnesses, let us know - then two members of staff will be present and witness the civil marriage ceremony.

Ceremony location
The marriage ceremony will take place in Tórshavn's City Hall. The municipality handles the marriage ceremony itself. Visit Tórshavn can answer other conditions around the marriage. Visit their website HERE.

How to proceed
If your submitted documents are complete, we will be able to make an appointment for your marriage. Please tell us your planned day of arrival in the Faroe Islands.

After the wedding ceremony you will be handed an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English.
