How to proceed
Inquiry and documentation

In order to get married by civil ceremony in the City of Tórshavn, you first need to send your inquiry about time and date to vigslur@torshavn.fo. Then you need to provide the required documents.

Required documents

  • Select the correct »Notice of Marriage« form below and send it to vigslur@torshavn.fo no sooner than 4 months before the planned ceremony:
  • Copy of your birth certificates and passport
  • Your Marital Status Certificate. Please note, that the Marital Status certificate is only valid for 4 months after it has been issued. So the certificate must not be older than 4 months on the day of the wedding.
  • Final divorce papers if you are divorced
  • Death certificate of your former spouse if you are a widow or widower

If the original documents are not available in English, they must be translated by an authorised translator before you send them to us.

All documents should be sent to vigslur@torshavn.fo. You will receive a confirmation from us when all documents are approved.

After the wedding ceremony we will hand you an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English.

Witnesses

On the day of the wedding you will need to bring two people to witness the marriage and sign the marriage register. Send us the names and addresses of the witnesses to vigslur@torshavn.fo.

Please let us know in advance if you are unable to bring two witnesses. We can then arrange for two members of staff to be present and attest the ceremony.

Ceremony location

The marriage ceremony will take place in the City Hall in Tórshavn. The municipality conducts the marriage ceremony.

If you wish to hold the ceremony in a different location in Tórshavn, you can contact a local wedding or travel agency, who can help you find a suitable place. When you have found a location and settled on a date, please inform us so that we can check if we can comply with your wish.
