Marriage ceremonies for visitors

Civil marriage ceremonies in the City of Tórshavn are solemnised by the major of Tórshavn and are pursued in Faroese with a translation in English. The ceremony is free of charge.

It is possible to get married Monday to Thursday between 10-15 and Friday between 10-14. It is not possible to get married on holidays.

Inquiry and documentation

In order to get married by civil ceremony in the City of Tórshavn, you first need to send your inquiry about time and date to Then you need to provide the required documents.

Required documents

  • Select the correct »Notice of Marriage« form below and send it to no sooner than 4 months before the planned ceremony:
  • Copy of your birth certificates and passport
  • Your Marital Status Certificate. Please note, that the Marital Status certificate is only valid for 4 months after it has been issued. So the certificate must not be older than 4 months on the day of the wedding. 
  • Final divorce papers if you are divorced
  • Death certificate of your former spouse if you are a widow or widower

If the original documents are not available in English, they must be translated by an authorised translator before you send them to us.

After the wedding ceremony we will hand you an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English.


On the day of the wedding you will need to bring two people to witness the marriage and sign the marriage register. Send us the names and addresses of the witnesses to

Please let us know in advance if you are unable to bring two witnesses. We can then arrange for two members of staff to be present and attest the ceremony.
