Multicultural Week 2025

Come and take part in multicultural dancing, family day, cooking workshops, music performances, and much more from October 22 to November 1.

During Multicultural Week, we recognize, embrace, and celebrate the diverse cultures in the Faroe Islands. The week provides a framework for shared experiences that create common memories and hopefully help strengthen our sense of community.

The week is designed to have a positive and curious spirit, and everyone should feel welcome. Multicultural Week has no specific political agenda.

How do I participate?

You can actively participate by performing, helping, organizing workshops or other activities during Multicultural Week. We aim to provide space for as many events as possible. Contact us at fjolmentan@gmail.com or drop by the International House, Tinghúsvegur 12, where we are based daily.

Put your mark on the week

Multicultural Week encourages everyone to take part: institutions, schools, workplaces, organizations, neighbourhoods, and individuals. The municipality organizes some public events, but anyone can arrange their own initiative or event in their environment. For inspiration, check out the Idea Box (in Faroese):

Multicultural Week across the country

Multicultural Week is part of the municipal integration network, and a key goal is for all municipalities to participate as much as possible. Several municipalities are already involved, and it’s great that Vestmanna Municipality is hosting the opening this year. Moving the opening helps ensure collaboration and makes us all feel part of the same whole.

Worth Considering

Here are some tips for those working with young people and children from immigrant backgrounds, and for participants in Multicultural Week:

  • Even if two people are from the same minority group, they may not have anything in common
  • Focus on shared traits and remember that all youth are individuals, regardless of origin
  • Young people have multiple identities depending on context. Besides being “foreigners,” they may also be dancers, grandparents, musicians, bookworms, handball players, or board game lovers. So don’t focus only on one aspect of their identity – think about what they value
  • Be cautious with labels, as they can feel stigmatizing
  • There’s a big difference between being an immigrant and being a refugee. Refugees may not want to talk about things like war
